You’ll find plenty of fantastic gelato in Split, but these two should not be missed!

  • Sladoledarnica Emiliana – Sladoledarnica Emiliana is renowned for its exceptional Italian-style gelato. This popular ice cream shop is known for its rich and creamy texture, wide variety of flavors, and authentic Italian style.
  • Ela’s Gelateria Artigianale – Ela’s Gelateria Artigianale is known for its delicious and high-quality artisanal gelato. They offer a wide variety of flavors, including classic favorites like chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, as well as more unique flavors like basil, lavender, and arugula. All of their gelato is made with fresh, natural ingredients and does not contain any artificial flavors or preservatives.

More Traditional Croatian Food

The following restaurants offer excellent Croatian food, but not necessarily any of the Split specialties I mentioned above.

  • ST Burek – This is a great option for a quick bite to eat. They serve only one thing. Burek is a traditional Balkan savory pastry made with filo dough and filled with a variety of ingredients. Typical fillings include cheese, ground beef, or spinach and feta. And it was featured on “Somebody Feed Phil.”
  • Kantun Paulina – If you’re craving authentic Croatian cuisine, head to Kantun Paulina in Split’s Varos neighborhood. This beloved takeaway joint has been serving up the city’s best cevapi (sandwiches) for over three decades. Enjoy their affordable and delicious menu, which also includes other fast food options like beef patties and grilled chicken breasts. Be prepared to wait in line.
  • Corto Maltese Freestyle Food – Corto Maltese is a popular local hangout known for its cozy ambiance, friendly service, and generous portions of tasty food. Whether you’re looking for a casual breakfast, a hearty lunch, or a relaxing dinner, Corto Maltese offers a variety of options at great value.
  • Matoni – With its vaulted ceilings and cozy atmosphere, this tavern near Bacvice Beach is a delightful escape. Enjoy authentic Dalmatian dishes prepared with the freshest local ingredients. A true gem, this tavern is one of the few places in Split where vegetarians and vegans can savor a truly satisfying meal, with a seasonal menu that changes to showcase the best of the region’s produce.
  • Articok – food and bar – Articok is a charming little restaurant just outside Diocletian’s Palace. Known for its innovative and quirky dishes, like gin gazpacho and gnudi pasta, Articok offers a refreshing dining experience. While the prices may be a bit higher and the portions smaller, the quality of the food is exceptional.
  • Villa Spiza – Villa Spiza is a hidden gem tucked away in a quaint alley in Split’s old town. This tiny, unassuming restaurant offers a unique dining experience with just a few tables outside and counter seating that overlooks the kitchen. Known for its fresh, locally sourced ingredients, Villa Spiza serves up daily menus based on seasonal availability. While it may not be the ideal choice for those seeking a formal dining experience, it’s a must-visit for anyone craving authentic, unpretentious cuisine.
  • Bome Boutique Restoran Split – The modern Mediterranean cuisine at this Michelin-guide restaurant is a delightful contrast to its soviet-style exterior. Inside, the cozy dining room features just seven tables arranged around an open kitchen, each guest treated with warmth and hospitality. Expect a flavorful dining experience with perfectly balanced dishes and a focus on texture.

Non-Traditional Restaurants in Split

  • Gourmet Bar Basta – Gourmet Bar Basta is a popular spot renowned for its authentic Neapolitan pizzas and vibrant atmosphere. This charming establishment offers a delightful combination of delicious food, stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and the city’s historic center, and a relaxed ambiance. In addition to their pizza menu, Basta also offers a wide selection of cocktails, wines, and other beverages. I highly recommend the pistacchio and mortadella pizza.

Whether you are a culinary adventurer seeking unique ingredients or a souvenir hunter on a quest for trinkets, the markets of Split will not disappoint. These vibrant marketplaces, teeming with a cacophony of colors and scents, offer a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture.

  • Gligora Cheese & Deli Split – Gligora is a family-owned business that offers a delectable array of cheeses, including their renowned Paški sir, a hard cheese made from sheep’s milk and known for its strong, salty flavor. Beware though, that they may ask you to taste a half dozen different cheeses before letting you make a purchase. But that’s not all. The deli is also stocked with a variety of other local and international delicacies, such as dried meats, olives, olive oil, honey, and wines.

  • Green Market – The Pazar, a sprawling outdoor green market, lies just beyond the palace walls. It is a daily pilgrimage for locals who must brave the throngs to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Look for home gardeners selling their daily harvest, their meager wares each occupying a mere fraction of a table.

  • Split Fish Market – A visit to these slippery stalls and pungent odors is a daily ritual for the citizens of Split. Here, generations of fish mongers hawk their wares in a quiet cacophony of bargaining and boasts from mid-morning to early afternoon.
